Perspective
On Saturday it was snaining pretty hard as we drove up, so the temple didn't look quite so perfectly situated. They probably took this picture on one of the two annual nice-weather days allotted to Lake Oswego, Oregon.Yesterday at church we learned about LDS Family Services. The presentation really put things into perspective, for I had been feeling sorry for myself because I developed another opportunistic skin infection in another bizarro place (not private, just weird). LDS Family Services is great, I'm sure, but I couldn't help feeling inexplicably lucky for not needing to go there. I thought, how come I don't have to worry about depression, abuse, adoption, addiction, same-sex attraction, or premarital pregnancy? What made me so special? And how come I could go to the temple on Saturday when so many people can't? What did I do to deserve being this happy? Then our closing hymn was "Count Your Many Blessings". I feel like saying, "Okay, God, I get it—we didn't need the song. And, thanks. I couldn't have done it without You; actually, I didn't do anything at all—You did."

I disagree that we disagree on "basically everything". I don't guess I really hate cats, I just think they are evil. Dogs are big, dumb and goofy, like me.
And your most recent post is plenty proof that we see eye to eye on important things. Disagreement and discourse are the keys to learning.
But there you go, focusing on the negative... LOL
Life is an interesting phenomenon. You've been very blessed. The interesting thing, though, is that you'll be expected to be a good steward of those blessings--which means in some way you're expected to share them with those who are in need.
I cannot count the times someone has lifted me, shared love, offered friendship or a shoulder when I needed to cry.
I'm one who has used LDS Family Services. I have felt the pain of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. I was raped multiple times at the ripe old age of eleven. I was unwanted by my mother. I have spent my life living with SSA.
Because of people who have been blessed like you, who were unafraid to seek out people like me to help me heal, I've also lived a wonderful life. I have a husband who loves me, three beautiful children, and a cherished temple marriage. I've served in Relief Society, Primary and Youth organizations. I've been blessed to teach seminary. I suppose I'm a success story in the eyes of Family Services. But that success has come because love has not been withheld from me.
I urge you, as you count your blessings, to find someone with whom you can share--someone you can love without restraint. I promise there is someone in your life at this very moment who needs you.

I went to lunch today with my mom and a bunch of the women in my ward who I love, who've been Young Women leaders to me, seminary teacher, Sunday school teachers, and just all around examples and friends. One of them needed to leave because, well, her son committed suicide about 18 months ago, and sometimes seeing other people his age (he was a grade ahead of me in school) going through big life milestones is really, really hard. And it got me thinking about how silly worrying about tracting is. Because I can do this, and I've been given so much, and my goodness, it's time to start sending it forward.
