Okay, I am now certain I have been away for too long. Why would you feel stupid? That's lame...
Back to Berzerkley and recruiting. Every city in this land reaps federal dollars. Every single one. They also reap the benefits of federal efforts at stemming drug trade, homeland defense and infrasructure. So when a (small, insignificant) city like Berkeley takes out it's collective frustration about the War on Terror on men who had very little choice in being sent in the first place, I think we need to take a step back and recognize asininity for what it is. And we aren't talking about adding recruiting stations. We are talking about these freakshows prancing around outside and not letting people in.
This is the same evolution of events that led to pro-lifers blowing up abortion clinics. How many of those Berzerkley weirdos recognize that?
The lying issue is another story. It's very hard for a recruiter to lie to anyone anymore. It's far too easy to check online for relevant facts. If a potential recruit doesn't, or their parents do not, then due diligence is not met, and the buyer is at fault.
As far as "opting in", the only requirement to "opt out" is to tell the recruiter to stop calling. It really is that simple. If the potential recruit is within seven days of his/ her eighteenth birthday, it's game on and the kid can do whatever he or she wants.
The real issue for me is simply that no one thinks they should have any responsibility to our nation anymore. We want the federal coffers to shell out for everything, from abortions to urinating on a cross. But we don't think we should have to pitch in. We don't want to pay taxes, vote or serve in the military.
